No! There is absolutely no requirement for you to change either. But there might be instances where you would prefer to. The reasons many people choose to formally change their names and/or gender markers is rooted in affirming their identity and improving their quality of life. Here are some reasons people might choose to do so:

  • Affirmation of Gender Identity
  • Psychological Wellbeing and safety
  • Safety and Privacy
  • Social and Professional Integration
  • Access to Rights and Services
  • Legal and Bureaucratic Consistency
  • Ease and Convenience
