Short answer, no. Long answer, sometimes under some circumstances.
Accessing gender affirming care as an adult does not require a WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) assessment. Ideally, your healthcare providers utilise the Informed Consent Model, which centres on your self-determination, autonomy and understanding. This approach allows adults to access gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) without the need for prior mental health evaluations or assessments.
But if you are considering or seeking gender-affirming surgery, many surgeons might have a policy requiring a readiness referral from a mental health provider, often referred to as a WPATH assessment. This assessment typically confirms your capacity to consent and ensures that the surgical intervention aligns with your goals. You will not be required to prove that you’re “trans enough” or “been trans long enough”.
If your surgeon has asked for a WPATH assessment, Deb can support you with this. Deb will conduct the WPATH with compassion, understanding and from a position that you know yourself better than anyone else ever could. Deb aims to minimise the number of sessions you will need to attend, the amount of money you will need to spend, and the disruption to your daily life. Deb offers in clinic (Watsonia) and telehealth (video) appointments to all transgender, gender diverse and gender exploring people across all of Australia.
